Pragmatic Aspects ofIdiomatic Expressions Translation

An significant fact that has to be underlined is that idiomatic expressions are not only colloquial words, as plenty of people think. They can appear in formal style and in colloquial speech. They can be found in verse or in the masterpieces of Dickens and newspapers.

What, then, is an idiom? One can say that an idiomatic expression is some collocation of words which, if found in the same place, mean something unlike from the separate expressions of the idiomatic expression when they are found alone. Other idiomatic expression are totally regular and reasonable in their grammar and vocabulary. Due to the peculiar properties of some idioms, we have to learn the idiomatic expressions as a whole and we occasionally cannot change any part of it (except maybe, only the grammatical form of the verb).
English is very rich in idiomatic expressions. In fact, it is difficult to speak or write English language without using idiomatic expressions. An English native speaker is sometomes not aware that he is using an idiom; perhaps he does not even understand that an idiom which he implements is grammatically wrong. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main aims, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically wrong causes him difficulty. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It is impossible to be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of words. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is often understood from the vocabulary.
